Winter Semester 2010/11 - Dreams and other Realties


From before Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1919) and beyond Inception (2010), from its very beginnings
film has been inseparable from dream. This course primarily will examine the poetics of cinema as it
relates to the oneiric nature of the medium, in works by such directors as Wiene, Keaton, Bunuel, Cocteau,
Welles, Resnais, Fellini, Kieslowski, Marker, Argento, Lynch, Wier, Cronenberg, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

To obtain a Pro- or Hauptseminarschein: regular attendance (no more than 3 absences), presentation and a critical paper (Proseminar: 1600 – 2000 words, Hauptseminar: 2400 – 5000 words on a film or films from the course’s filmography (see „Courses“ at www.tomwhalen.com).  Grade will be based on class participation (40%), Referat (30%), papers (30%).  Non-credit students are welcome at any of the screenings and discussions.
